In 1991, a meeting was held in Nashville, Tennessee, that included several people interested in helping meet the mounting needs for medical supplies and equipment in the former Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations. Dr. Randy Steger, marketing professor at David Lipscomb University, presented a proposal to serve as a pilot program that would utilize the energy and abilities of students to solicit donations of supplies. Through this urgent need for humanitarian relief the students organized the Healing Hands ministry, which was later incorporated as Healing Hands International in 1993. Since acquiring a 501 (c)(3) status in 1996, HHI has shipped to over 70 different countries in need. With a total number of over 300 shipments, it is easy to see God’s hand at work in the ministry.
The Lord has truly blessed all the efforts put forth in this program. The need has been established. The pipeline of resources has been tapped. What was once an idea has become a tool to provide aid to people in struggling situations throughout the world. Most importantly, this ministry has proven to be an excellent way to give glory to God and bring recognition to the local church.
HHI seeks to accomplish this mission through helping congregations of the churches of Christ collect, ship and distribute medications, medical supplies, equipment, agricultural aid, school supplies, and other items that reduce human suffering. Missionaries and church leaders will continue to be the source of distribution in host countries. Medicines and medical supplies will be distributed to competent medical and relief workers in close relationship with these missionaries. Aid will be provided to all people, regardless of race, religious preference, creed, or ethnic background.
