From Surviving to Thriving!

January 5, 2024

Hunger to Harvest training is about helping God’s people go from surviving to thriving (in the wise words of our retiring Hunger to Harvest Program Director, Carl Burkybile), learning and taking on the uplifting words of the scriptures along the way.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.

They will be like a tree planted by the water

that sends out its roots by the stream.

It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.

It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Jeremiah 17:7-8

Thanks to dedicated donors, the Wakefield Primary School in Zimbabwe was recently able to host a their second Hunger to Harvest event at their school—a Garden Maintenance seminar! This follow-up session addressed weed and insect control, plant disease prevention, proper storage for pending harvests, the importance of mulching, and even solar dehydration methods for surplus vegetables! With 25 raised planting beds, Wakefield students and community members harvested an abundance of leafy vegetables—collecting plenty to feed their families, and selling the extras for an $80 profit! After preparing to replant with the next crop, the students decided to focus on raising and selling onions.

“This training is helping me feed my children. It will also bring in income for my family and the school.”

— Priscila, School Principal

“This training is helping us feed the whole school… and bringing income to the school. Thank you so much for teaching us to raise our own food!”

— Rhoda, Student

As the great onion harvest comes to a close for this season, the students are already excited to start the next planting. Their smiles easily show how genuinely happy they are to have the opportunity to learn about farming, to grow food for their own lunches, for their school and community, and for their future families.
