Healing Hands International’s Disaster Response program recently extended support to communities in Kenya affected by flooding, reaching three specific areas and providing essential supplies to a total of 1,100 people in need.
One of the impacted communities was Bala, located within the former Rachuonyo District, along the shores of Lake Victoria. The region is known for its tropical climate and lakeshore lowland geography—marked by volcanic hills such as the Homa Hills, white salt deposits, and economic activities centered on fishing, agriculture, and artisanal mining. The terrain includes eroded gullies and valleys, which can intensify the effects of severe weather.
Following heavy rains, more than 300 families in the Bala area were displaced when River Oluch burst its banks. Floodwaters marooned homes and caused significant losses of household items, livestock, and crops. Many affected families sought refuge at a local church, appealing for both food and non-food assistance to survive.
In response, HHI provided vital aid, including blankets, mosquito nets, mats, maize flour, cooking oil, salt, and other essential items to support displaced families during this difficult time.

Deborah, a mother of five from the Bala area, shared her experience: “I am very thankful for these gifts from Healing Hands International. The water swept away my belongings from my home. My family and I have been camping in the local school. Now, I have received a mosquito net, mat, blanket and food items. These are so helpful for me and my family.”
Community leadership also expressed gratitude for the support. Irene, Area Chief, stated: “In a very special way, allow me to thank the Healing Hands International. They have supported the community, and the community members are very thankful. A total of 350 families were affected when River Oluoch busted its bank. They provided food and non-food items, and the people are very appreciative because women now have blankets to cover themselves and their children to keep warm. The water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitos, and now they have mosquito nets. They now feel safe, thank you very much and God bless.”
Through timely intervention and the support of donors, HHI has helped restore a measure of safety, dignity, and hope to families facing the aftermath of devastating floods.
