From Drought to Harvest: A New Chapter in Saramba, Kenya

May 23, 2025

In the hilly, red-soiled community of Saramba, Kenya, families who once relied on livestock for their livelihood faced devastating loss during the recent prolonged drought. With nearly all their animals gone, the community was forced to rethink their future. Through HHI’s Hunger to Harvest program, hope has begun to grow—quite literally.

HHI Trainer, Joseph Ole Saoli,  recently held a Hunger to Harvest workshop in Saramba totalling 30 participants, including men, women, and children. These determined individuals received hands-on training in sustainable farming practices tailored specifically to the region’s rocky terrain. Together, they built raised garden beds and planted seedlings that will soon provide fresh, nourishing vegetables.

Maria, a mother who attended the training, shared how transformative the experience was: “This training is going to help me to feed my children. Also, I will be able to bring income for my family. My children will have good health because they will have fresh vegetables. Thank you so much for this help and training.”

In addition to crop farming, the community is embracing environment-friendly activities like beekeeping—creating not just food security, but also a path to self-sufficiency.
