HHI Women of Hope Trainer, Elizabeth, recently facilitated a follow-up Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) training for the Kinyorban Women’s Group in Nkwanta North, Volta, Ghana. Elizabeth has witnessed a remarkable transformation in the group since their first meeting. “The teachings from the business conference helped a lot in changing the way some of the women used to think. They have a different perspective on life, business, and financial matters,” she shared. As the women become more business-minded and financially stable, Elizabeth notes that they are now being viewed more positively in their community.
The impact of the VSLA training is evident in the personal stories of the women involved. Akosua reflects, “Joining the VSLA group has been a life saver! Before… I didn’t know how to save and would buy things on impulse. Now, though I cannot write, I still find a way of managing my time, saving, and planning for future events. My husband’s attitude towards me has also changed drastically since he now values me more! I look forward to a brighter future for me and my family.” Georgina, once shy and reserved, shares, “Before I joined this group, I was very shy and kept to myself. However, I have been encouraged to speak, share ideas, and take on small responsibilities, gaining more confidence. Today, I am the secretary of our group, and I proudly help others understand how to save and plan. I never imagined I could lead, but being a part of this group and program helped me find my voice and believe in myself.”
Mercy, who had long depended on her husband, now feels empowered: “I was always at home, depending on my husband, and I felt like my dreams were behind me. Today, I am proud of who I am becoming—more focused and more enlightened. I’m planning on taking a small loan soon to start a small business. I’m so grateful to our sponsors!” The positive effects of HHI’s Clean Water program and the Women of Hope initiative are clearly evident in this community, fostering growth, confidence, and empowerment among the women.
