A Tale of Transformation
Posted by Alisa Van Dyke on November 27, 2018

For more than 25 years, the story of Healing Hands International has been one of transformation. The village of Choruma is a beautiful picture of this! This region is found in the low-lying dry area of Zimbabwe with extremely hot temperatures. Natural water sources such as rivers or streams are rare.  Because of these adverse conditions, gardening projects are unusual and exist only where a man-made water source is found.

HHI came to this village because of an invitation from the local church of Christ preacher in 2016, at a time when the group was facing two main challenges…garden insecurity and the lack of sufficient water. A food security workshop was conducted in 2016 and again in 2017.  In 2017, we were also able to assist the group with fencing material, tools, seeds, and other farming materials.

In March 2018 the HHI Director of Agriculture, Carl Burkybile, visited the project and was impressed and encouraged by the hard working group.  At this time, the group made a compelling appeal for a water well saying, “We have been forced to concentrate on a few planting beds because of the water shortage. We take turns to do the watering by day and some by night. We wake up as early as 3 am to water our plants.”

Just a few months later, because of generous support from the Wilkesboro church of Christ, this request was granted and the community now has a reliable water source! With the success of the garden and a source of clean water, the church has begun to grow. Preacher Trymore Simango said, “The assistance from HHI has contributed to the tremendous growth of the church, both numerically and spiritually!”  With growth came more needs. The church meets under a tree near the garden, but most were sitting on the ground or bringing chairs from home. The church was able to purchase four pews with money raised from the sale of the vegetables produced in the cluster garden. HHI and her partners were later able to provide additional pews, song books, and Bibles. Since HHI entered their story, the local church has grown from 6 to 80 members...total transformation is happening!

As we look towards the future, as a board and staff, we are committing to a vision of Total Transformation. By bringing together our individual ministries in strategic communities like this one, we believe we can transform body, mind and soul. By giving towards our end of the year campaign, you can become our "Teammate in Transformation." Now is the time to enter the story...
