Why 4 Miles?

How far do you walk to get water? One mile? 100 yards? Or is it just a few steps to the faucet?

Every day in developing countries, women and children walk an average of four miles to collect the five gallons of water that their family will use that day for cooking, cleaning and drinking. This chore typically takes several hours and is a physical strain. Many children are unable to attend school because of the time that is needed to collect water.

That is why "we walk so they don't have to." Walk 4 Water began in Nashville in 2007. Particpants sign up, set a goal and ask friends and family to sponsor them. Then, they come out to a local park where they join hundreds of others in a beautiful day of walking, music and a celebration lunch. The event has grown each year and satellite walks have developed in various cities across the country.
