Sharing the Light of Education

Without a pencil and paper, how can a child learn to write? Without a classroom and chalkboard, how can a teacher properly share his or her knowledge? How can a child go to school when there is none?

Throughout the world, children are unable to get the education they need because of a lack of resources. Their communities simply do not have the tools to teach these children and develop their educational system. Often, many leave school and seek to find work to help their families survive, continuing a cycle of poverty that has existed for generations.

Healing Hands International works to give children and their communities the help that they need to lift themselves out of this destructive cycle of poverty and dependence and into a life of self-sufficiency and growth. By providing everything from pencils and books to computers and desks, Healing Hands International is working to improve the quality of education worldwide and bring new hope to children and communities in need.

  • In Cuba: Every school age child in the country was given a pencil as a result of an HHI shipment.

  • In Kenya: Microscopes sent to Made In The Streets Ministry helped teenagers learn more about the world around them.

  • In Honduras: Children and teachers in some of the poorest communities were given new classrooms and supplies following the devastation of Hurricane Mitch.
This is Simon Dabish, an evangelist in the Muslim-dominated area of Nigeria. In a recent shipment sent to Nigeria by HHI, Simon received several boxes of pencils. After some discussion, Simon and his wife decided this would be a great opportunity to share with everyone in their community. Simon and his wife dressed in traditional Muslim clothing, out of respect for their neighbors, and distributed the pencils to every child in their community.

At first, Simon was not sure that their efforts had made a difference. Not long after that, a riot broke out in his community in which radical Muslims were burning down every church building in the community. When the group came to the church where Simon and his family work, one of their leaders spoke up and said,“It is good for us to teach the Christians a lesson, but there is one church that must not be touched. They are the ones that gave our children pencils!”

A few months later, Simon was on his way home from preaching at a neighboring community when he met a second mob. When they realized that he was a Christian preacher they captured him and brought him to their leader to be killed. The leader recognized Simon and said, “We will not kill this man! This is the same man who gave pencils to our children!” Simon was safely escorted home to his family who believed him to be dead.

Praise God for the amazing ways he carries out his providence! Who would have ever thought something as meaningless as a pencil could become a tool for saving a life?
