Haiti Rocked By Worst Earthquake in 200 Years

June 1st:

  • The drilling rig has now completed 16 water wells in tent cities throughout Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area.

  • New dresses have been distributed to young girls. These dresses were made by church sewing groups here in the U.S.

    March 8th:

The new drilling rig has arrived in Haiti and the second well has already been dug!

  • HHI representative, Hary Hames, is now on the ground in Haiti and will be coordinating efforts there for the next several weeks.

  • All four containers of food and supplies have arrived and been realeased.

    February 17th:
  • First water well in use. Curt King, driller for HHI, has successfully completed the first well in Port-au-Prince. He has been struggling with poor equipment, but a new rig has been purchased and is own the way to him now.

  • Flatbed truck purchased. Healing Hands is cooperating with Dr. David Smith, an Arkansas physician who works with Haiti Christian Development Project, to purchase a large flatbed truck to transport food and materials from the dock in Port au Prince to the most needed areas of that huge city. The truck, which will be in Haiti within days, will also distribute food donated from other parts of the country.

  • Healing Hands presence in Haiti. Harry Hames, a deacon in the Beltline church of Christ in Decatur, Alabama, has agreed to return to Haiti for the next several months to serve as the HHI representative coordinating and auditing all the work and money being spent in recovery and rebuilding.

February 8th: Last Wednesday, HHI shipped our second container of aid to Haiti. This container included items such as tents, flashlights, batteries, shoes, crutches, wheelchairs and other medical supplies.

  • This past weekend, churches from Houston and the surrounding area came to together for a special event to raise money to bring hope to the people of Haiti. It was hosted by the South Union church of Christ and brought together several hundred Christians from many congregations. The event was a great success! • The Healing Hands survey team just returned safely last week from Haiti. To the right is a photo from their trip. Lynn Griffith is pictured distributing water filters to church leaders. We will be continuing to use the information they brought back to assess the best methods of response.

  • We also have plans to send a follow up HHI representative to serve as a point person for distribution and coordination in the coming months.

We have begun drilling! Pictured to the left is the drilling rig in Haiti in the process of bringing clean water to the refugee camps there. HHI has plans to drill at least 30 water wells in Haiti this year.

Update: Fox news featured Healing Hands International's response in Haiti. To see more click here.

The city of Port-au-Prince where the earthquake struck, has a population of over 2 million. The U.S. has been told to expect serious loss of life. Healing Hands International is working hard to collect information and form a strategy to respond to the people of Haiti as quickly as possible.

Our first goal is to meet the immediate needs of these victims by purchasing food supplies and providing access to clean water. Funds have already been sent through the Estes church of Christ in Henderson, TN to assist the Roberta Edwards Orphanage and also through the White's Ferry Rd. church of Christ. We are also sending water filters so that bottled water does not have to be purchased. Each individual filter will supply clean water for more than 100 people a day. These filters are available to be purchased for $50, by contacting HHI at (615) 832-2000. For more information about these filters, click here.

We have also supplied a medical team that is on it's way to setup an orthopedic trauma unit.

We will be continuing to respond in phases of support. The following is our plan for response as of now:

Phase 1:
Disaster Assessment, food, water and tents We have been in contact with various mission points in Haiti and now have a good idea about where to go and who to help.

Our first assessment team arrived on Saturday, January 16. Our second team will be departing on Monday, January 25. We have already wired down money to several areas to purchase what food is available outside the disaster area and then shipped into the worst locations.

The price of food is going up and this method will only work in the short term.

We are currently researching other sources for food from the Dominican Republic. We have sent down a load of water filters for 9,000 people and need money to purchase more. These filters cost $50 each. Each one can filter 300 gallons of water per day, which can supply 150 people.

We need to get as many filters as possible down because contaminated water will cause more deaths in the long run than the earthquake.

Phase 2:
We are collecting medicine and medical supplies for large shipments to selected places when the transportation is available.

We are looking into sending some medical teams when we feel the security issues are in better control.

Phase 3:
Reconstruction Period. In our past experiences, building materials will be scarce and will have high prices. To support as many mission points as possible, HHI will be working on acquiring large amounts of selected building materials to be shipped at a later date. Clinics, schools, and orphanages will have the first priority.

Phase 4:
Micro business and food sustainably projects will be conducted. Survival garden workshops and small business development workshops for widows will be included.
