Celebrating the Life of Dr. Henry Farrar

A Special Person Has Walked Among You!

Every generation has its heroes.  Those people who make a difference in this world and inspire others to want to be like them. One such hero is Dr. Henry Farrar. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, he obtained his M.D degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis.

In October 1964, after becoming a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr Farrar left a life of guaranteed wealth in America to serve the poorest of the poor in Africa and China.  With his wife Grace and their six children, the Farrar’s spent most of their time in Aba, Nigeria where they founded the Nigerian Christian Hospital. Henry’s favorite line was that “Doctors do the cutting and God does the healing.”

In his later years, Dr. Farrar continued to inspire others by serving on the boards of Harding University, International Healthcare Foundation and Healing Hands International.  He and Grace continued in their eighties to take trips to Nigeria to serve the poor. Their family was important to them. They taught all their children to appreciate education and all six children earned advance university degrees.

Henry’s desire was always to walk in the steps of Jesus, teaching and serving people, especially the poor and lost. For those who knew him, he will always be remembered for stopping in the middle of a sentence to sing a song of praise or to quote a poem that showed his love to a risen Savior.
